They are extremely fragrant especially during the hours of dawn or the evening. They are an attractive tropical flower that blooms in late summer, and continues to bloom until the first frost.
They can grow 4-30 feet tall and depending on the your pruning techniques it can be wide 3-4 feet or even bigger depending on the weather, and soil conditions.
These beauties are a show stopper to anyone walking nearby. Dont confuse the Brugmansia with the Datura, even though similar they are different. If the shear sight doesn't grab your attention, the fragrance will pull you and the honeybees in, for a closer look.
The Angel Trumpets do best in climates with mild winters, such as zone 9 and above. In Oregon we have zones 6-9, you will have to protect the root system in order for it to come back the following year, or take it inside with a grow light. Here is what you can do. Before the first frost you can prune it all the way to the stomp and heavily mulch with non-seeded hay about 8 inches above the stomp. This will protect the root system and will come back the following year. Keep in mind if too much of the root is exposed during winter it will die and you may find yourself looking for another Angel. In the mean time you can root the cutting from the pruning you just did. Add them to a glass container, give it clean water 2-3" in a bright lit location, changing the water every 2-3 days and watch it grow roots. You will have identical cuttings from the mother plant.
You can also dig them up and put them in a container and move them inside your home or greenhouse. They will continue to bloom, grow, stay green and full of trumpets all year long, depending on the conditions, as long as they are kept above 60˚F they can survive a long winter inside the greenhouse. What has worked for us is planting them very close to the house or planting them in a 20G container on wheels to move inside/out.
When the flower blooms they look similar to the shape of a trumpet. They love the sun but need plenty of water on hot/dry days. Brugmansia are heavy feeder, we like to use 5-50-17 Hawaiian Bud & Bloom once a week. They come in several colors peachy orange, pink, yellow, whit, variegated, and doubles, triple flowers. Make sure to wear gloves as some people are sensitive and Brugmansia's are known for the Angel of death if consume due to its toxicity.
