Here at Parkrose Greenhouse we like experimenting and growing more than 70 varieties each year. We start them in February and by May they are ready to go home in a 1 gallon container. Customers are always asking, "how do you get them so healthy?". Well, with a good dose of love and hard work, it pays off. Here are some tips on getting your tomatoes planted in your garden right away.
1. All tomatoes require FULL SUN. At least provide them with 6 hours of sunlight each day. The more the merrier.
2. After finding a spot for your tomato, dig a hole big enough to plant our 1 gallon pots. Break up the bottom part of the roots, by spreading them. This gives them room to establish themselves in a new home.
3. Types of soils to use: we like using a 3 way mix, this works well to amend any existing soil to loosen it up by adding organic matter. Additionally, you can add fish fertilizer or chicken manure.
4. After planting and adding the amendment or soil, make sure to water it. A good soak will do daily until it is establish. After establishing, they require about 2 gallon of water per week.
5. Watering: Its up to you to be aware of your tomato water intake. During hot days give it a good soak, during cold days, you can skip a day or two. Make sure to water the soil and not the plant itself, this will prevent from flower rot, tomato rot, fungus.
Pretty soon, you will have fruit bearing tomato plants and ready for eating. If you have any questions feel free to message us on Instagram or text us at 971-387-8200.
